Cry Conflict - Never Say Never 1985

CryConflictNeverSayNever

The magic of 'DIY' music with lyrics you can only write when you are 18 years old. Brisbane in the 1980's. An image on the cover of the police dragging off a protestor and a voice cut of the then American president never saying never to war (now they just do it!). Includes the prophetic chorus:"they don't need a reason they don't need no justification they did this time they will do it again it goes on and where will it end". The songs use reggae rhythms in a new wave blend. Well received on community radio at the time. The Re-released CD includes a number of demos and unreleased recordings.

My Crime

Sometimes I feel so sure then it all just slips away
As each day melts into the next and I don’t get anywhereThe noisy endless line eats all the now away
Sun bounces back off the glass
And back up to the skyI know my crime
In my prison
Standing hereI look just like the rest
On a shorter way to hell
Bare feet on broken glass
I’m dancing with myself
Dark rings bloodshot eyes
Climbing over prison walls
Barbwire chains silent songs
I am singing one todayI know my crime
In my prison
Standing hereDark falls the end of day
A cold and lonely street
Pity meets the preacher
No one left to pray
Written on the prison wall
Someone was here
Pity for the beggars
and those who have to payI know my crime
In my prison
Standing here

I know my crime
In my prison
Standing here

I know my crime

The angels of death

The angels of death fly low
Red white and blue from the sun
Thundering in from the heavens
Crying death with their gunsThey don’t need a reason
The don’t need no justification
They did it this time they will do it again
Mother will the death squad come againThis time it is the end
There is no food left to burn
Dead children they cannot play
Dead children they cannot starveThey don’t need a reason
The don’t need no justification
They did it this time they will do it again
Mother will the death squad come againThe angels of death a distant roar
Behind a bloody stain
A bloody stain fragrant death
Whose war is it any way? Here come the angels of death
God on side wielding the sword of
j ustice and judgment
Their cry rings through the hills
Whose war is it any way?
The angels of death a distant roar
Raise their arms blood under their fingernails
Singing to god the holy song
Disciples of lord and mercy

Uniform of mercy uniform of god
Take a blood stained world and hand it to the lord

They don’t need a reason
The don’t need no justification
They did it this time they will do it again
Mother will the death squad come again

Contact

I tell you something now
about the things I’ve learned
Some people have to come out fighting
from the day they are born
I have had my share
I won’t stand aside
Do you hearing me yelling
Well I am on your sideWe don’t have to want to live this way
From here to underground we will not relent

I never had any sense
I probably never will
But I’ll do the best I can
When the time does come
Shadow man take me there
Do you hear me yelling
Well I 'm on your side

We don’t have to want to live this way
From here to underground we will not relent

The meaning

The meaning
Well alright
Feelings and rightsThey tell you nothing
You need to know
Close the door before you go
Just the same it is your name
They nail you to the floorTo the way
Say what your meaning
To the way
Mean what you say

Politicians always lie
Us the people live and die
They give you nothing they can’t take
And make you pay for their mistakes

To the way
Say what your meaning
To the way
Mean what you say

The dying world

The time has come
We are on our way
You and I we are going to die
I don’t know why the hell I 'm here
Life has gone all I know is fear

An imprisoned cry of the dying world
See it in the eyes now I’m called

This countryside is blistered
And it smell of death
The dead man they list with the due respect
But I can’t fight for what I cannot see
They sent us here to die and they call us free

I can’t more I closed my eyes
Won’t go away do I have to die

The dying is over I am alive I say
The dead are beside me I try to cry
But fear eats the tears the war ate my humanity
Existence in the normal world no I would rather die

There is no reason it is just absurd
Walk down the line now I am called

The body rots

Tell me what I am feeling
Since the other day
I only hope that it will
Evaporate and fade
Stay away

Another strange emotion
Twists at our insides
Does it mean the book I read
Really didn't’t lie love is just a lie

Feeling for the moment
Face another day
Don’t you bother with truth
The definition changes as the body rots
No one can arrange it you are the one that stayed

In our brightest moments the lights were always out
Put you on a pedestal and it shuddered with doubt
and tensions wound

Feeling for the moment
Face another day
Don’t you bother with truth
The definition changes as the body rots
No one can arrange it you are the one that stayed

And on the TV they taught you how to act
But you don’t see it is from that world that you can't come back
They gave you morals they gave you rules
But I can’t take those double standards and raise them high

People always playing but what a dirty game
Up and down the mountain
But no one knows the rules and the judges they are all fools

Feeling for the moment
Face another day
Don’t you bother with truth
The definition changes as the body rots
No one can arrange it you are the one that stayed

Factory

Full of night born in hell
These chains are on a defeat less soul
These chains are on a relentless goal

The weary bones the blood shot eyes
You are free to die in prison
You are free to crawl away and rot

The factory

The deafness burns
The whining chorus of hell
The wheel spins the cycle turns around
You are born to what you choose
They are only sometimes yellow

The factory

The organ hymn the face of faith
These walls are as thick as you make them
These walls ah crumble if they are shaken

The factory

Before we win

I stalk the streets and I stumble in time
Wrong side wrong side of the line
No strength left for a cry of pain
Empty head and the end of the playHow long
How long
How long
Before we winThe faces stare in the halls of fame
The ghosts there have got last names
Scratch on the wall the emblem of death
The colour of the face nothing left

The towns grow quieter as the factories close
The faces tell the story take the toll
Still some do prosper on poverty's stench
The bodies not enough rip out the soul

Private school children shout on the bus
No work to day for the likes of us
Out the window the suburban sprawl
Peoples little paradises make your stomach turn

Fortunes of our lives

He said you have got to do it the other way
Start from the middle climb top to bottom
We all we pray to silly gods and scrap the barrel
Of the fortunes of our livesAt night they know the only roads
From the mountains right down to the sea
And don’t forget to turn the other cheek now when your lonely with the fortunes of our livesRun from the border run for a fight
Put your hands into the fire and pull back the night
The stand and fight they stand and fall
Shadows in the night their fortunes callIn the day they fight in the hills
And the bullets they heavy the earth
And don’t forget to turn the other cheek now when your lonely wit the fortunes of our livesHe said and they always know
He said there is a long way to go
He said and they always know
He said he said he said
Don’t you come around

With the fortunes of our lives

Songs

Bob Dylan’s on every corner
Singing the same old songs
About the 1960’s
But now those days are gone
In the subways all around
The voices echo out the tunes of
T he social revolution that came and left too soonThe times and the changes
The lovers and the losers
The poets and the dreamers
And the writing on the wallNow all the tunes of discontent have fallen to the wind
And another age of hopelessness thunders in
How have the mighty fallen affluence the sword
Now they quote the songs in the history books
Is history just a wordThe times and the changes
The lovers and the losers
The poets and the dreamers
And the writing on the wallAnd I still sing those songs myself sometimes
Because they still mean a bit to me
Because history is important to what you want to be
And I still sing those songs myself sometimes
Because they still mean a bit to me
Because history is important to what you want to be

The times and the changes
The lovers and the losers
The poets and the dreamers
And the writing on the wall

The times and the changes
The lovers and the losers
The poets and the dreamers
And the writing on the wall

Again

Come on and say it
I don’t know what to do
Living in this world
This feeling makes me blue

An age is such a long time
I think of you
Time and time
To bang your head
Against the wall

Again happening again
Again happening again

I had to do it
Don’t you see
It is all that left for
People like me

Again happening again
Again happening again
Again happening again
Again happening again
